In 2007, the world was introduced into the secret society of the Upper East Side, and let’s face it, we all wanted in. Adapted from the best selling novels created by Cecily von Ziegesar, the series revolved around the lives of those in and wanting in on the glamorous life of the Manhattan’s elite. If that wasn’t enough, their was the ever looming blogger, Gossip Girl, who spilt the secrets to just about everyone, about what exactly was going on.
The series began on 17th September 2007, with the return of it-girl, Serena Van Der Woodsen, whose mysterious disappearance from the UES, allowed her best friend, Blair Waldorf, to become Queen. Over the course of the series, the two constantly battled to keep their friendship, while each finding their own spotlight. Then there was Jenny Humphrey, born in Brooklyn, who too wanted a piece of the spotlight. And while it did come to her eventually, along the way, she learnt some very hard lessons, which lead to her banishment from the UES.
And then there were the boys, starting with our favourite bad boy Chuck Bass. A minor character in the book, the role was expanded for the tv series and became one of our favourite characters. As well as his ever increasing need to please his never good enough father, his relationship with Blair capture all of our hearts (Chair fans you know who you are!). Then there was Nate, who flitted from one relationship to another, while trying to find who he should be without his legacy, without his family and without the UES. Then, there is Dan Humphrey, another outsider wanting in, who grapples with his love for Serena, while trying to stay out of the spotlight.
Other roles expanded from the book, were Lily Van Der Woodsen and Rufus Humphrey, whose new book story became a firm favourite with fans. Former friends (and more), the two reunite after learning of the relationship between their children, Serena and Dan, and they two go on a roller coaster, via more failed marriages and fights over money.
And lest we forget, the whole reason for this show, the ever mysterious (well, until the final episode at least!) Gossip Girl, whose destructive nature to blow secrets, has caused it’s fair share of, shall we say, problems, over the course of the series.
So, after 6 seasons, 121 episodes and countless Gossip Girl blasts, the show sadly ended in December 2012. But don’t worry, the legacy of Gossip Girl will still live on for years to come, with the cast going on to new highs, an official GG Day on January 26th and, of course, boxsets!!!
